Vossie Feature: Star student chooses Eduvos.
Post by Eduvos, 15 February 2023.
Hoërskool Punt matriculant and Dux Prize winner from Mossel Bay, Edrei Gerber, talks to us about being a top achiever and starting his tertiary studies at Eduvos.
Congrats on your awards! Can you tell us more about it?
I was my Grade’s top achiever since grade 8. In matric, I got the first position for academics every term and then I was awarded the Dux Learner prize at our final prizegiving. I got top marks in Maths, Afrikaans, IT, Accounting, Economics and Physical Science.
What subjects did you take at school?
I did Mathematics, Afrikaans, English Second Additional Language, Life Orientation, Physical Science, Economics and Accounting as subjects at school. Then I did Information Technology (IT) outside of school as an additional subject as my school did not offer it.
Did you do extracurricular activities?
I played hockey for my school. I also played some eSports in my spare time.
Why did you decide to study at Eduvos and not a more traditional public institution?
I was won over by Eduvos at their presentation when they came to speak at our school. They really impressed me. I went to do some research and saw that they offered the qualification I want to study.
What are you going to study at Eduvos and why did you choose this field?
I will be doing a Higher Certificate in Information Systems (Cyber Security).
I’m also looking forward to meeting people with the same interests as me. At school, I often talked about computers or IT things and people would have no idea what I was saying. There were only three learners who had IT with me.
What do you hope to do after your studies??
My plan, or five-year plan – so to speak – is to complete my higher certificate and then hopefully get a job in the industry. While working, I want to complete my Cyber Security degree part-time at Eduvos.
What are you most looking forward to during your time at Eduvos?
I am looking forward to my time at Eduvos but I’m also a bit nervous. It’s going to be an adjustment. But I’m excited to meet new people and I want to see what it’s like to be a student.
We are so proud of our future Vossies and can't wait to welcome Edrei and all our first-year students to campus on 27 February.
