Inaugural Eduvos Alumni Association Campus Connect Event.

Inaugural Eduvos Alumni Association Campus Connect Event.

Post by Eduvos, July 16, 2024.

On Wednesday, 10 July a cohort of Tyger Valley Eduvos Alumni braved the wild Cape Town weather to attend the inaugural Eduvos Alumni Association Campus Connect event of 2024.

There were Alumni present ranging from the Class of 2019 SRC President, Nicky Lurwengu, who is now working as a Labour Lawyer, Mathew Riley, Class of 2023, who works in digital marketing at the Vuka Group and a Class of 2022 Alumnus who is a Student Affairs Advisor at the Tyger Valley campus, Elmary Witbooi.

The evening started with an introduction to the newly established Alumni Association by Julie Hendricks, Eduvos Alumni Manager, the purpose for its establishment and the short and long-term goals for the Association.

Our goal is to build a community of ENGAGED Alumni who are CONNECTED, and who feel they BELONG to the wider Eduvos community. LEARN from each other and SERVE the Eduvos community via involvement in mentoring programmes, networking, community projects and highlighting employment opportunities.

Nthando Lurwengu, Class of 2021, Mr South Africa 2021 and South Africa’s representative at the 2024 Mr Universe competition to take place in September in Los Angeles, USA, then gave a talk in which he gave insights into his educational journey at Eduvos Tyger Valley, how his Bachelor of Commerce has helped him to secure and thrive in his current role as Client Success Manager at AES Global, an IT talent solutions provider. It was interesting to hear how he found the HR component of his degree the most challenging and thought he would never use it again, but now he is fully involved in all things HR-related.

After this insightful talk, the attendees were introduced to the Spark Experiment. This is an experimental methodology of establishing personal, “human” connections between people via conversations sparked by various questions on Spark Cards.

This methodology facilitates the demolition of invisible walls and boundaries we surround ourselves with. The disarming nature of the questions allows people to realise they all share a humanness which is often forgotten or overlooked due to socially normalised stereotypes, prejudices, perceptions and personal pigeon-holing.

This exercise allowed the Alumni to get to know each other beyond their titles, degrees and years of graduation. These conversations allowed meaningful connections and insight into the similarities which exist in people beyond what was initially perceived.

This event was the first of our Eduvos Alumni Association Campus Connect events, so we hope to connect with all our Alumni wherever you may now be living and working.
