In a world where financial constraints often limit academic potential, Thabiso Nzalo, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Software Engineering) student, is a clear example of the transformative power of bursaries. His journey from a challenging upbringing to a promising future in technology illustrates the profound impact of financial aid and personal determination.

A Resilient Upbringing
Born and raised in a female-dominated household, Thabiso faced numerous challenges growing up. Despite these difficulties, he found inspiration in the hard work and determination of his mother and aunt. Their perseverance instilled in him the belief that hard work could overcome any obstacle.

“I didn't have it easy, but my mother and aunt are hard workers and people who believe that if you work hard, everything will work out for you. I’ve been living by that ever since,” says Thabiso.

Thabiso remained focused on carving out a future where he could make a difference in society.

Driven by Technology
Recognising the increasing role of technology in our society, Thabiso is passionate about using different technological approaches to help people in need. One approach that stands out for him is Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make people’s daily lives easier.

“What motivated me was the fact that technology plays a big role in our society, and it makes life better for everyone. I want to contribute to that by taking things to the next level through AI and transforming healthcare and educational systems,” says Thabiso.

Thabiso places great importance on driving innovation and turning his ideas into reality. “When I investigated my career choice, I saw Software Engineering. I just thought that is where I want to be because my code can make things better for everyone. I can create new things and create new apps that will help make lives better,” he adds.

While Thabiso excels in academics, he also enjoys creating music and playing basketball. “I love Basketball. I've played for the Mpumalanga provincial games twice. Now I represent Eduvos in the first team,” shares Thabiso.

Finding Hope Through a Bursary
Reflecting on his academic journey, Thabiso recounts a moment when his family faced financial difficulties, which led him to consider putting his studies on hold. However, due to his excellent academic record, Thabiso received financial relief through our bursary partner, Pernod Ricard.

“I was losing hope because of everything happening around me. But then I received the Pernod Ricard bursary. It reminded me that nobility still exists and there are still people noble enough to help people,” says Thabiso. “Thanks to them I'm able to pursue my career.”

Receiving this bursary means that Thabiso doesn’t need to worry about paying his tuition or an allowance, because that is covered for him.

Words of Wisdom and Gratitude
Thabiso’s life motto is to work hard, and he advises other students to follow this principle. “My advice to other students and prospective students is to work hard and aspire to be the best; everything will fall into place. You need to work on becoming better than yesterday,” advises Thabiso.

With hard work comes great rewards, particularly bursaries that allow students to pursue their dream careers without financial worries. Thanks to the Pernod Ricard bursary, Thabiso could continue his studies uninterrupted.

“I'm really grateful for what Pernod Ricard has done for me, and I would like to show that gratitude by excelling even more. I hope that they can continue to support students who are goal-driven like me and impact their lives as well,” says Thabiso.

Thabiso's journey is a powerful reminder of the difference that financial support can make in a student's life. As Thabiso continues to excel and pursue his dreams, he exemplifies the spirit of resilience and ambition that bursaries help to nurture.
