Bursary Opportunities with the JB Marks Education Trust.
Post by Eduvos, May 10, 2024.
Quality education should be accessible to all, yet financial barriers often get in the way. At Eduvos, we aim to partner with organisations, like the JB Marks Education Trust, that can financially support students in South Africa coming from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Since its inception in 1997 by the National Union Mineworker (NUM), the Trust has empowered young people to access education, from undergraduate to post-graduate. The Trust seeks to provide funding to 250 students (200 undergraduates and 50 postgraduates) for their tertiary studies.
We met with the JB Marks Education Trust team, who provided some valuable information for those seeking funding support for their studies:
What does the financial support cover?
To ensure that you are fully supported as you embark on your tertiary education journey, JB Marks Education Trust covers everything giving you peace of mind. This may include your Eduvos enrolment, tuition, textbooks, extra lessons by tutors, meals, and accommodation.
What are the eligibility criteria?
The JB Marks Education Trust aims to support students from underprivileged backgrounds and schools. Along with their motto, “To change the life of a NUM member through education”, the Trust recognises that students from underprivileged backgrounds might not have proper career guidance and would not have applied to pursue higher education endeavours.
Why did you choose Eduvos as a strategic partner?
Eduvos offers four intake opportunities throughout the year. If you were financially excluded or got rejected due to capacity or other reasons at your preferred institution, you can secure funding from the JB Marks Education Trust and still start your studies at Eduvos in the same year instead of waiting until the following year. Over the past few years, JB Marks has consistently provided funding support to Eduvos students, fostering a partnership that has progressively strengthened over time.
How can students find out more information?
JB Marks is partnering with Eduvos’s 2024 work-readiness workshop. Eduvos offers a holistic work readiness module for students, with modules tailored to cover the Trust students. JB Marks looks forward to a lifelong partnership that will benefit the students. This workshop will ensure that Eduvos students stand a better chance of employment as soon as they complete their studies.
“Our beneficiaries come mainly from poor backgrounds, but we treat them respectfully and encourage them to use the funding opportunity to transform their lives and communities. We hope Eduvos lives up to its values to help us achieve the Trust vision—Human Capacity Building Through Education.” said the Principal Officer, Jako Mokgosi
Partnering with the JB Marks Education Trust not only enables access to quality education, but students can experience a smooth transition from high school to tertiary education while avoiding financial concerns.
