Eduvos Durban (Umhlanga) Hosts First Model United Nations Conference.
Post by Eduvos, December 11, 2024.
In October 2024, 29 students from our Durban (Umhlanga) campus made history by participating in the very first Eduvos Model United Nations (MUN) Conference. This student-led initiative offered a dynamic simulation of the United Nations, where participants took on the roles of international delegates to tackle pressing global issues and explore the nuances of diplomacy.
The highlight of the event was the Best Delegate Award, which celebrated the exceptional efforts of Keholin Naidoo (representing USA), Jiya Jugernarth (India), Sharlin Naidoo (Israel), and Shreshtha Jadoonandan (South Africa). These talented students stood out for their well-researched arguments, respect for fellow delegates, and impressive mastery of UN protocols. Their recognition is well deserved and reflects their dedication to understanding the complexities of global relations.
The two-day conference brought together students from various faculties to engage in thought-provoking discussions within the General Assembly and UN Security Council committees. The MUN experience is much more than just a debate–it’s a platform to develop essential skills like public speaking, resolution writing, conflict resolution, and critical thinking. These are the building blocks for becoming active and responsible global citizens.
“The MUN community left me with a phenomenal imprint, especially the conference that was held. From my stance in the Security Council, I could see the multiple opinions different countries hold. Being part of these discussions with my fellow delegates was heartfelt and exciting. The passion and objectivity displayed by all delegates made every discussion immersive. Throughout the year, MUN has taught me to approach discussions respectfully while strengthening my arguments. I look forward to what MUN has to bring next year” says Soendus Faatima Wahab, Bachelor of Commerce in Law Student.
The success of this inaugural event has inspired the MUN student board to expand their efforts. Next year, they will host two conferences and invite local high school students to join in the debates. This is a fantastic opportunity for young minds to engage with international issues, develop key skills, and gain insights into the world of politics and policy making.
As the UN's Global Education First Initiative aptly states: “It is not enough for education to produce individuals who can read, write, and count. Education must fully assume its central role in helping people to forge more just, peaceful, tolerant, and inclusive societies.”
At Eduvos, we couldn’t agree more. The MUN initiative exemplifies our commitment to equipping students with the tools to make a meaningful impact on the world stage.
