Eduvos Pretoria Inspires Future Coders at New Hope School.
Post by Eduvos, July 11, 2024.
Our Eduvos Pretoria campus embarked on a memorable journey to New Hope School with a mission to kickstart a Coding Bootcamp and ignite a passion for programming in the hearts of Grade 10, 11, and 12 learners.
New Hope School offers education services for learners from diverse cultural backgrounds, each facing unique challenges such as cerebral palsy, physical disabilities, traumatic head injuries and specific learning disabilities. The school is dedicated to providing an inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive.
Eduvos Academic Programme Convener Information Technology, Eunice Kingenga , along with our enthusiastic Pretoria Vossies siezed this golden opportunity by Martelna Pollard, the New Hope’s Computer Application Technology teacher. The Vossies, including Tlangelani Khosa, Khilona Piyarlall, Sandile Mahlangu (SRC), Nevin Tom (SRC), Gugu Khampepe, and Tendai Simbanegavi set out to broaden the IT horizons for these bright young minds, taking the learners beyond the basics of HTML and CSS.
Their goal was to showcase the vast world of programming beyond just front-end development. The session began by teaching the students how to print shapes in Java. From there, they moved on to the basics of outputting strings, with the students eagerly engaging and asking questions, eager to learn. To truly ignite their passion, the team introduced a fun and slightly more complex project: creating a rock-paper-scissors game in Python.
“The excitement was evident as the students saw the magic of coding unfold before their eyes. I was truly amazed by how quickly these students grasped the concepts and their sheer enthusiasm,” says Tlangelani Khosa, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Software Engineering) student. “It was heartwarming to see their curiosity and excitement grow with each passing minute.”
At Eduvos, we firmly believe in the power of community outreach. We encourage our students to actively participate in programmes that make a positive impact. This initiative was a perfect example of how our students and staff come together to share knowledge and inspire the next generation. Our Vossies were humbled by this experience and grateful for the opportunity to work with the learners at New Hope School.
