Eduvos Hosts its First-Ever National Moot Court Competition.

Post by Eduvos, November 22, 2023.

Eduvos proudly hosted the first-ever National Moot Court competition, with 138 students participating within 46 teams.

The Moot Court has been running since law programmes were first introduced at Eduvos, however, this is the first to include so many campuses. It challenges all participants to enhance their critical thinking and sharpen their research and oral presentation skills while interacting with their peers from all over the country.

In 2021, only the Midrand and Bedfordview campuses competed against each other. In 2022, the moot court was regional, and it included Midrand, Bedfordview and Pretoria.

The preliminary rounds of the moot court took place from 14 to 18 August over Microsoft Teams. Our esteemed academic team from the Law department served as judges. The case being argued was a civil procedure matter about labour law and defamation.

Eight teams made it to the finals and the case was State versus Ninow. This topic was chosen to highlight the crisis of gender-based violence (GBV).

Our judges were:

  • Dr Tinaye Chivizhe – Acting Dean of Faculties and Head of Programme for Law

  • Christo Fritz – Attorney and Academic Content Writer

  • Bella Monsoon – Mental Health Professional, Digital Content Creator and YouTuber specialising in crime

  • Dr Edwin Coleman – Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg

After much deliberation, the following students won top honours:

  1. The Quadrigis Spiritis Award (for the campus with the best team spirit) - Mbombela Campus

  2. Winning Junior Team (1st years) (Roshni Lazarus award) - Part-Time students: Sbonga Dlamini, Aden Bartes, Kiara Pathee

  3. Winning Junior Best Speaker (1st year) - Aden Bartes

  4. Winning Senior Team (2nd / 3rd year) Midrand Campus - Jayden Luke Duncan (3rd year) and Loshaine Munyangama (2nd year)

  5. Winning Senior Best Speaker (2nd / 3rd year) Midrand Campus - Loshaine Munyangama (2nd year)

Congratulations to our winning teams and a special thank you to our dedicated academic teams and judges. We know our students always look forward to the opportunity to take part in the Moot Court and build practical, real-world skills and experiences.
