Eduvos IT Showcase 2023: Celebrating Student Innovation and Industry Partnerships.

Post by Eduvos, October 18, 2023.

On 28 September, our Eduvos Tyger Valley campus hosted its annual IT Showcase, an opportunity to present our IT offerings to industry and allow our students to showcase their hard work and talents while networking with industry professionals.

A total of 15 students participated in the event, which included an Information Systems student, specialising in Web Development and, second and third year BSc Information Technology students specialising in Software Engineering and Data Science. These students exhibited a strong sense of assurance when presenting their work, indicating thorough preparation for the event. Our Vossies stepped out of their comfort zones, with some students delving into tools and technologies that were not included in their current course materials. As a result, they explored diverse concepts including:

  • Chat Applications for different types of business models using Android or C#

  • Web Design: PHP, HTML and CSS

  • Sports Management Application: Extracting sporting activities from Strava

  • Hospital Management System: C#

  • Invoice System: Java with Spring framework

  • South African Sign Language Recognition System based on a Long Short-Term Memory Neural Network: Python

The event was attended by prospective and current Eduvos students and over 27 industry partners and organisations. In hosting these employability initiatives, Industry partners have the privilege of selecting top talent from the Eduvos pool, assisting the industry in filling crucial positions with the ideal candidates. While also providing our students with invaluable exposure to industry standards and a boost of confidence to our students presenting their systems to a broader audience beyond their peers and lecturers.

A highlight of the event was a project developed by second year Data Science student, Tyron Lambrechts. Tyron created a South African Sign Language Recognition System using a Long Short-Term Memory Neural Network. This innovative system had the ability to learn sign language gestures and then display the corresponding words on the screen. The prototype featured commonly used South African words such as "braai" and "hello."  As a  gesture of support, Computer Hardware Specialist (Pty) Ltd and Pinnacle offered their assistance in donating a new Logitech webcam for this project.  Keep an eye out for an upcoming feature on Tyron and his innovative project.

As a result of this event, many of our students were presented with numerous interview and internship opportunities from a range of industry professionals in attendance. This is an incredible honour for our students and their hard work and dedication, and we believe it is also a testament to our commitment to shaping potential towards Africa’s prosperity.
