On Friday, 8 March, Eduvos Durban (Umhlanga) campus welcomed primary and secondary school staff from around Durban as they held an event to celebrate International Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Day. SEL Day is a global event that celebrates, advocates and brings attention to SEL.
The Eduvos Humanities faculty focuses on creating awareness around wellness and social justice discourse. Getting an emotional education via SEL is the first step to understanding what makes us human. Our Vossies were front and centre showcasing the human condition at the event, which was presented to an audience of educators, school principals, and other Vossies.
Eduvos Literature Lecturer, Derosha Moodley, whose research is focused on using language and arts education to teach social and emotional learning competencies, prepared an introductory lecture to social and emotional learning. Presenters taught the audience SEL strategies together with the latest global platforms where educators could access SEL resources for their schools and digital applications to monitor their own mental health.
Each of the SEL strategies were communicated via lecture format as well as through radio drama and live role-plays presented by Eduvos students. The Eduvos Durban (Umhlanga) theatre club enthralled the audience with their live demonstrations via dramatic scenes that showcased the use of SEL strategies in everyday life.
Student wellness and student experience are vital to Eduvos’s holistic approach to education and our Durban (Umhlanga) campus is proud to have contributed to another initiative.
