Student success and empowering students is at the heart of what we do at Eduvos. Meet Oreabetse Makgatlo, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Software Engineering) student who shares his journey as a student at our Eduvos Midrand campus

Inspiration behind success
Born and raised in the village of Jericho in the North West, Oreabetse comes from a family of teachers who shaped him into the person he is today. His grandparents and mother inspired him to pursue his passion for technology. Oreabetse’s motivation didn’t stop at home; he was also encouraged by friends and mentors to follow his dreams.

“The primary force behind choosing to pursue IT comes from my overall love for tech, specifically computers,” shares Oreabetse. “Another source, in addition to the inspiration at home, is my friends. I remember one time when I was showing my friend blueprints for a project that I was trying to build for Science Expo and he said to me that I should do robotics, I belong in the IT field.”

Striving for excellence
Studying at Eduvos aligned perfectly with Oreabetse’s dedication to the IT field. Although he didn’t start as a top student, his determination to succeed was unwavering.

“I wasn't always a bright student who performed well in Grade 12. However, I pushed myself to improve and implemented multiple strategies to get better grades,” says Oreabetse.

Through a diverse student community and one-on-one support at Eduvos, Oreabetse was able to put his best foot forward and make significant contributions both during and after his studies. In recognition of his relentless pursuit of excellence, he was invited to join the prestigious Golden Key Society, which is reserved for the top 15% of students.

Easing financial burdens
Despite his academic success, Oreabetse faced financial difficulties. However, his outstanding academic performance earned him a bursary from Cipla through Eduvos. This financial support alleviated the burden on Oreabetse and his family, allowing him to focus entirely on his studies.

“After receiving the bursary, I have less stress and more time to focus on my studies. I don’t have to think about expenses my mother has back home because she doesn’t have to use that money to fund my studies,” says Oreabetse.

Oreabetse encourages students in need of funding to never lose hope. “It's not too late.  Put in the work and improve your average as high as possible,” says Oreabetse. “Never lose hope. Before I received this bursary, I had completely lost hope. I faced rejection after rejection. Then, out of nowhere, I receive a call.”

Oreabetse’s story underscores the importance of perseverance, the power of community support, and the impact of financial aid in transforming lives.
