Have you felt disheartened when your aspirations for higher education seemed out of reach? Whether that stems from not meeting entrance requirements or struggling to finance your studies, with the right tools you can achieve the impossible. Meet Nompumelelo Precious Matiso, a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology & Political Science) graduate from the Eduvos Bedfordview campus, who was determined to pursue her passion for psychology.

A Young Girl With Big Dreams
Originally from Brakpan in Gauteng, Nompumelelo always dreamed of pursuing a career in psychology and being a source of encouragement for the people around her. Growing up in a small town, Nompumelelo aspired to help people overcome challenges through therapy and improve the well-being of communities.

“I always dreamed of pursuing a degree in psychology to help people through therapy,” says Nompumelelo, “but I also wanted to continuously work with people in communities and help them develop interventions to better themselves and the communities they are in.”

Discovering Alternative Options
After completing high school, Nompumelelo was set on carving a path to success. However, life doesn’t always go as planned, and Nompumelelo didn’t achieve the academic results needed to gain admission into a psychology programme. Despite this setback, Nompumelelo felt determined to explore her options and landed on the Pre-degree Foundation Programme (Social Science) at Eduvos.

“After conducting research, I discovered the pre-degree programme offered at Eduvos,” says Nompumelelo. “This programme was designed for students who wanted to build the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in higher education. Excited about the possibilities, I decided to enrol.”

Filled with a renewed sense of purpose, Nompumelelo’s career aspirations were within reach again. This Pre-degree Foundation Programme helped Nompumelelo develop essential skills, enabling her to excel once she entered the psychology stream at Eduvos. Additionally, the programme taught her various vital skills like writing techniques and stress management that will serve her in her future career.

“During the pre-degree programme, I was exposed to foundational modules in psychology, research methods, and writing skills,” says Nompumelelo. “Another impactful aspect of the programme was the focus on personal development. This programme taught me effective study habits, time management, and stress-reduction techniques. These skills not only enhanced my academic performance but also boosted my confidence.”

Massive Achievements
With this solid foundation to enter the workforce, Nompumelelo was ready to make significant contributions to society. Since graduating in 2017, Nompumelelo attempted the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) board exam to start her career.

“I wrote the HPCSA board exam and obtained 92%,” she says. “Today, I am a qualified Registered Counsellor working in my own private practice for the past six years and at a local regional hospital.”

Nompumelelo’s story is another reminder that there are limitless possibilities to make your dream a reality. “I encourage prospective students to pursue their passion and explore what they can do to secure their future,” advises Nompumelelo.
